In starting the Harris Whisky Company, Mark Harris has realised an ambition that he has held for many years – from the days when he was introduced to single malts by the Scottish bar manager at the Capital Hotel in Knightsbridge, London. He found that he had the ability to understand the intricacies of these fine whiskies and was able to pick out the various characteristics that make each one unique. Today, Mark is managing director of Green’s Restaurant in St James’s, where he has established a large, unusual and diverse whisky list. Many customers rely on his knowledge to select them the perfect dram to suit their individual taste - they are delighted to be able to purchase his choices by the bottle (or even the cask!!)
The Harris bottlings are all chosen by Mark personally, he explains "Not wishing to sell only to the whisky connoisseur, I am very keen to introduce the ever increasing number of spirit drinkers to the individual complexities of malt whiskies. Our bottle label is certainly aimed at the new wave of whisky drinker, yet at the same time gives all the important information to the connoisseur. The front label is unique and eye catching and the surprise comes upon the inspection of the back label where fantastic descriptors give way to a simple points system, rating smoke, peat, sweetness, dryness, spice, fruit and complexity with marks out of five. This system allows the prospective buyer with decades of experience, or the first timer, to know exactly what they are getting."
