Chateau Unang is tucked away among the foothills of Mont Ventoux, in the heart of Provence. It is an ancient estate dating from the ninth century, protected from all-comers by its own forest but with glorious views across to the Plateau de Ventoux. Here, owners James and Joanna King produce a range of exceptional, complex red, white and rosé wines, each a unique reflection of the local terroir.
The 20 hectares of classic Rhône varietals, mostly more than 30 years old, are spread around the 60-hectare estate. Red grapes - dominated by Grenache (45%) and Syrah (25%) - account for 90% of the planting. Yields are kept low, on average around 35 hectolitres per hectare, to give more concentrated, expressive fruit. The high altitude of the vineyards, which adds an extra three weeks to the growing season for the red varietals (the white Rousanne and Clairette are planted closer to the valley floor), and the effect of the Mistral wind give healthy, disease-free grapes with complex aromas and flavours.
The Côtes du Ventoux appellation has now changed to AOC Ventoux to reflect the importance of the stunning Mount Ventoux which is at the very heartland of this beautiful wine region. The Rosé 2008 is the first of Château Unang's wines to be bottled under the new appellations.
