The château and its vineyards were owned by Laurent and Sylvie Gosset up until 2008 but they have been sold to Baudry-Dutour, one of Chinon's best known producers.
The vineyards are located on Chinon’s plateau and hills on the limestone clay Tuffeau soils that produce the finest and most long lived Chinon wines. Approximately 98% of the vineyards are planted with Cabernet Franc whilst the remaining 2% is Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cabernet Sauvignon is currently being phased out as it is not suited to the château’s vineyards.
Laurent and Sylvie have worked hard to ensure that each wine expresses the true and unique character of the vintage and the Chinon terroir. As such every single vintage that is produced on the estate is completely unique showing very specific characteristics and requiring different lengths of maturation before release.
All Château de la Grille’s wines are aged in bottle at the property and only released when they are ready to drink and when all the new oak flavours have mellowed sufficiently. This gives the drinker the unique opportunity to buy wines that are ready to drink on release as Laurent envisaged. This having been said after purchase the wines can often be cellared for several decades. This older wines retain an amazing freshness whilst mellowing and developing a range of new characteristics.
Following the sale, we await the next move for Château de la Grille with interest. |
