Husband and wife team Christian and Karine Lauverjat’s domaine lies in the village of Sury-en-Vaux in the heart of the Sancerre Appellation. The property has been in the family for several generations but Christian and Karine are the first to make and bottle their own wines.
The Lauverjat’s have great respect for their vineyards and the environment around them. They seek to produce harmonious wines that express the domaines unique terroir and have good balance. The 12 hectares of vineyard grow on the slopes of one hill which gives a range of different exposures and two main soil types. The upper part of the hill is dominated by limestone clay soils, known locally as terre blanche which produce full bodied, well-structured wines. The lower part of the slope has a pebble limestone soil known locally as caillottes which tends to produce lighter more fruity wines. This ideal location allows the Lauverjat’s to produce subtle and varied wines which display individuality and finesse.
The 2005 vintage saw a new project for the Lauverjats. Bottled under the Karine Lauverjat label they have created a Pouilly Fumé from carefully sourced grapes to compliment their existing range of Sancerres.
