The Mann family has been growing vines since 1793. In 1948 they expanded into wine production. The house of Wunsch et Mann is in the centre of the village of Wettolsheim. The family owns 20 hectares of vineyard around the village, with substantial holdings in the Grands Crus of Hengst and Steingrübler. They also buy in fruit from local growers with whom they work very closely.
Wunsch & Mann is a family affair. Jean-Louis is oenologist, joined in 2005 by his eldest son Jean-Francois; Marc is responsible for viticulture. The wines are sensitively produced, reflecting the characteristics of each vintage. The family advocates a system of vineyard management known as Viticulture Raisonée (Reasoned Viticulture), chemicals and pesticides only being used when strictly necessary. This allows them to work more in harmony with the environment while maintaining the health of the vines.
Wunsch et Mann produces the full range of Alsace varieties, including the Crémant. Of the two Grand Cru vineyards, we have chosen to concentrate on the distinctive Hengst, located on the southern edge of the village of Winzenheim. These wines are very concentrated, with prominent minerality. In their youth they are full-bodied and powerful; with age they develop more pronounced yet softer, elegant mineral notes, and can be cellared for several decades.
