Hawkes Bay is located on the eastern side of New Zealand’s North Island. Due to its proximity to the coast, hot dry summers and its level of rainfall, it is well suited to the cultivation of vines and production of fine wines. Alpha Domus is wholly owned by the Ham family who came to New Zealand from The Netherlands in the 1960s. Today they work with winemaker Kate Galloway to produce a range of white and red wines.
The Alpha Domus estate is located 20 kilometres from the coast and comprises 35 hectares of relatively infertile free-draining silt loam soils overlaying river gravels which are ideal for the production of great wines. The vineyards, which are predominantly planted with Bordeaux grape varietals, are all tended by hand, using environmentally sustainable methods. In recognition of this Alpha Domus is an accredited member of Sustainable Wine Growing New Zealand.
The family philosophy is to 'produce wines representative of their terroir; that display good varietal character; are powerful without forsaking the qualities that make a wine enjoyable right through to the last drop'. This philosophy comes shining through in their range, which includes the award-winning Bordeaux blends The Navigator and The Aviator, and with their softly aromatic whites.
