Rooiberg Winery is a co-operative situated beneath the peaks of the Langeberg Range in the Breede River Valley and is named after the mountain that overlooks it. Founded in 1964, it now has 34 members contributing grapes from privately owned farms that surround the winery. These vineyards fall into four distinct micro climates that give the winery the flexibility to produce a varied and interesting range of wines. The wines are made in Rooiberg’s own modern winery by winemaker Eduard Malherbe and cellarmaster Andre van Dyke.
Over the last few years we have seen a new energy and many changes at Rooiberg. There have been huge improvements in wine quality and new modern packaging that is clear, distinctive and stylish.
Rooiberg has also been at the forefront the Biodiversity and Wine Initiative in South Africa becoming the first co-operative winery member in 2005. The Biodiversity and Wine Initiative has been founded to safeguard the natural environment on or near vineyards. Rooiberg’s location is exceptional being a meeting point for the floras of the Karoo, renosterveld and fynbos. The number of plant species in this area cannot be matched anywhere in the world for a comparable dry area of the same size. Eight of Rooiberg’s farms representing 65% of the co-operatives vineyard area have been selected for the project. |
