In 2001, the McCallum family purchased the vineyard site - then used for cattle and sheep grazing. Overlooked by Mt Dottrel, the natural beauty of the vineyard where the grapes for the Mount Dottrel wines are grown held only a trace of all that these 21 hectares could yield. At latitude 45º'bc south, the vineyard is in the world’s southern most commercial wine growing area and in New Zealand’s only true continental climate zone of hot summers and icy winters.
With an alchemist’s eye, Pinot Noir vines were soon planted. Today, that decision has seen the gold emerge. The boutique wines are handcrafted to exacting standards. They achieve a quality that sees them competing alongside the world’s best.
Consultant viticulturists Robin and James Dicey of Grape Vision Ltd manage the day to day vineyard operations. Winemaker Carol Bunn of VinPro Ltd contributes her award-winning acknowledged Pinot Noir expertise, garnered from Central Otago, Martinborough and Oregon. Together this close knit team of award-winning professionals draw the best from the land, the best from the grape, to produce Mount Dottrel's own offering of Otago’s new gold. |
